D’IBERVILLE, Miss. (UMNS)–Their red shirts and caps say SEMA, but they are not to be confused with staff of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a federal organization that has been criticized for its sluggish response to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

SEMA stands for Scouting Emergency Management Assistance, a title coined by Boy Scout Troop 566, sponsored by Trinity United Methodist Church in Warner Robins, Ga.

“We’ve come here seven times now,” said Michael Hilton, 13, a member of the Georgia troop that rebuilds homes on the Mississippi Gulf coast.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

J.J. Palliser, a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 175 in Niles, will collect used cellular phone equipment as part of his Eagle Scout project through the end of October. Cell phones, batteries, chargers and accessories, as well as pagers, PDAs and Blackberries may be dropped off in collection boxes throughout the community. Everything collected will be donated to Call to Protect, a national non-profit organization assisting domestic-violence survivors. The goal is to collect 500 cell phones. Donations are tax deductible and receipts are available. E-mail J.J. Palliser at bsascout175@gmail.com.

Fundraising Suggestion in Texas

Announcements

From Mack in Texas:

I’ve got a fundraising tip for you that you might want to share with your listeners, especially in Texas. Up here in Arlington, the Sonic Drive-In chain will allow non-profit groups to come in and serve as carhops for an afternoon or evening. (I think they only do it on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon here. That might vary from store to store.) Anyway, we’ve been doing this for a couple of years - once in the fall and once in the spring - and it is a great, fun, and easy fundraiser. The boys come dressed in uniform and we put signs at each drive up menu that says who we are and that we are working for tips.

The Sonic employees prepare the orders and the boys just have to carry them out and collect the money which they bring to the Cubmaster (or some other adult) who serves as cashier. Sonic also will require an adult to accompany each child, so you need your parents on board as well. People have been incredibly generous with us each time we’ve done this. We work from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, usually in three shifts. Each time we’ve brought home between $750 and $1000.

Our boys look forward to this fundraiser because they think it’s cool to get to go inside the Sonic! The manager has
been extremely complimentary of our boys and says he looks forward to having us work! I don’t know if all Sonics do this, but if you’re looking for a relatively painless, quick way to pick up some extra money for your Pack, call your local Sonic and ask if they do this. Our experience is that you will need to book well in advance because since they only have two shifts per week, they fill up fast with cheerleader groups, church groups, etc. But I think Cub Scouts have an advantage because of the cool uniform! Gets good tips!

Rain Delay Tonight

Announcements

I was coming in to record a show and it started raining and lightning a lot. My luck, the electricity will go out right in the middle of recording, so I’ll post the show Monday night.

No Show Tonight

Announcements

So I tried to record a show on Friday night, but spent the time playing video games with the boys. Tried Saturday night, but played basketball with the boys. Tried today, but hung out with the boys instead. Tried tonight, but invited some of my and the boys’ friends over.

Since I saw a pattern forming in my habits this weekend and since I never see both the boys for an entire weekend anymore, I have decided not to record a show this week.

I have a lot to talk about, with some new intros to the show and lots of e-mail. I am anxious to record, but want to make sure it’s up to my usual standards, whatever those are.

Thanks to everyone who has added their name to the Frappr Map and voted at Podcast Alley in the past week.

Talk to you next weekend…
