Hero’s Welcome For Space Shuttle Atlantis Crew (Article no longer on website)

06/24/2007 - All 7 were reunited with their family and friends after spending two weeks in space.

To music and cheers they returned the crew members of STS 117, grinning from ear to ear, happy to be home.

Commander Rick Sturkcow, STS 117, says “we are so happy to be back, and have a successful mission.”

The return home was perhaps the sweetest for astronaut Sunny Williams. Hitching a ride back to earth after spending more than 6 months on the international space station, emotions ran high.

Sunny Williams, Mission Specialist, says “a couple of people out here, is I have to thank, my family and friends, thanks.”

Among the family and friends, the biggest bundle of excitement belonged to a group of cub scouts, who were eager to welcome their cubmaster and astronaut Danny Olivas.
Kyle Sellis, Cub Scout, says “we’re here to welcome him back to earth; we’re here to welcome Daniel back to earth.”

Their pride bolstered by the fact that Olivas was instrumental in repairing part of Atlantis’ thermal blanket, the astronaut admitted, he was a little nervous.

Danny Olivas, Missions Specialist, says “I think there was to some extent, I’m hoping this is good enough and wanting to be doubly sure.”

A proud day for everyone, but an extra dose for the cub scouts. Michael Colton, parent, says “to have someone like Danny to lead our children is just incredible. He exemplifies all things that are good in this country.”

  1. Cindy Pope Says:

    Hi Chris,

You had mentioned doing a spreadsheet to keep track of leader training. Here is a site with spreadsheets readymade for both cub scout leaders and boy scout leaders: http://trax.boy-scouts.net/trainingtrax.htm

    Hope you find it helpful,
