Every February, Cub Scouts around the world have their Blue and Gold Banquet - an annual party that celebrates the birthday of the scouting program.
Pack 566 in Warner Robin is no exception, holding their Blue and Gold Banquet this past weekend at Trinity United Methodist Church.
But while the Blue and Gold Banquet has a typical format - food, games, decorations in (you guessed it) blue and gold - this year Pack 566’s celebration had a little extra twist.
Almost a year ago, in May, the Cox family - Griff and Jennifer along with their two kids, Garrett and Ashlyn - accompanied Dad while he was TDY in Hilton Head. Griff’s parents, Gary and Virginia, met everybody in Hilton Head for a family vacation.
The family gathered at the pool one day while Griff was working. Garrett, who was 7 at the time, had taken swimming lessons but Ashlyn, 4, couldn’t swim and was confined to the shallow end near her grandfather.
Mom called Garrett and Ashlyn out of the pool and the kids complied. But then Ashlyn decided to jump back into the pool, in water over her head.
Ashlyn began struggling and bobbing in the water trying to get air, but she couldn’t get her face above the water level.
Without hesitation, and before the adults could reach Ashlyn, big brother Garrett jumped in, swam to his sister and got her to the pool steps, where her grandfather and mother were frantically waiting.
