Podcast #92-Patches, Grown-Ups and Sr. Webelos

A better way to stick on those patches and someone needs help with a District volunteer dinner start the new year for AHAW. I throw out some questions to ask before joining a Troop and get my allergies all over my own show. Still need some more feedback on whether I should add music to the show.

Hi, Chris! Here’s some feedback about music in the podcast. I think that “bumpers” would be nice versus full-length songs. Firstly, putting in full songs means more work for you. You can only use “podsafe” music, and you’d have to go to sites like GarageBand.com and then search for and screen music, and you’d have to do that for each show. That’s a lot of work!

But “bumpers” would be a nice break between segments in your show. These are just short 5 or 10 second bits of music or sounds that introduce segments. So, for instance, maybe you’d have a little jingle played just before you read listener feedback on each show, a little jingle played just before a segment about this month’s pack meeting, etc. Once you’ve found the music you want for each segment, you’d keep it the same so that it eventually becomes and audio cue for regular listeners. It also breaks up the long podcast of straight speaking. And, once you’ve gotten it established, it’s the same from week-to-week, so that cuts down on the work. You’ll have simply established a formula.

Also, have you ever considered doing interviews on your program, say once a month or so? I listen to a podcast from PracticalBackpacker.com, and it’s basically a weekly interview show. It sounds like it’s done via the phone. I’m not a podcaster, so I don’t know anything about the technical aspects of interviewing someone and recording the conversation. I think some podcasters use Skype for that. It might be interesting to have some guests on from time to time. You could get listener feedback for interview topics. Some of my close-to-the-heart scouting topics include: Webelos-to-Scout transition, planning the Webelos outdoor program (I teach that at our Pow Wow), leader training and how it ultimately helps the boys, etc. I think that could be very interesting to listen to.

Sorry if any of this has already been talked about on the podcasts. Like so many others, I have a lot on my plate, and I’ve gotten behind in my podcast listening. I hope to catch up soon!

Thanks for the ‘cast! And thanks for putting out my request for ideas for our district awards dinner in the last episode!
